Giant Jarl, written by Gary Gygax and published by TSR in 1978, is a classic high-level adventure for the first edition of Dungeons & Dragons. As the second installment of the "G" series, it follows G1: Steading of the Hill Giant Chief and precedes G3: Hall of the Fire Giant King. Campaign and plot summary The quest: The module is set in the World of Greyhawk, where an alliance of giants is attacking human-occupied lands. After confronting the hill giants in G1, the player characters (levels 8–12) follow clues to the stronghold of the frost giant jarl, Grugnur, in the Crystalmist Mountains. The environment: The adventure takes place in a large, vertical glacial rift, with caves carved out of ice and stone. The sub-zero environment is an active hazard, with treacherous, slippery ice and reduced visibility from snow and wind. The enemies: The icy dungeon is inhabited by frost giants and their allies, including ogres, winter wolves, and white dragons. Player characters must deal with the extreme cold and the giants' brutal, Norse-inspired tribal society. The mastermind: As in the other G-series modules, players will find hints of a more sinister force behind the giant raids. The adventure concludes with a path leading to the lair of the fire giants and the discovery that drow elves are orchestrating the attacks.
